Liquid silicone rubber (LSR) is a high-purity, two-part elastomer that has become a material of choice across industries where precision, durability, and biocompatibility are essential. Unlike traditional solid silicone rubber, LSR is a flowable liquid that is injected into heated molds and cured rapidly, enabling the production of complex, high-tolerance parts at scale. Its unique chemical structure—built on strong siloxane bonds—gives it exceptional resistance to temperature extremes, chemicals, and environmental degradation. But what does this versatility actually look like in practice? Here is a breakdown of where LSR is used and why.
Medical Devices and Healthcare
The medical industry is arguably where LSR's properties shine brightest. Because LSR is bio-inert and hypoallergenic, it does not trigger adverse reactions when in contact with biological tissue. This makes it suitable for both implantable and non-implantable applications.
Common medical uses include seals and gaskets for surgical tools and diagnostic equipment, valves in respiratory and infusion devices, and syringe plungers where low friction and high purity are critical. LSR is also widely used in catheters, tubing, and peristaltic pump components, as well as wearable health devices like sensor housings and bands. Its compatibility with sterilization methods such as gamma radiation and autoclaving further cements its role in healthcare environments.
A notable performance advantage is LSR's low compression set—typically 10–20%, compared to 40–70% for many other elastomers—which ensures reliable sealing over long service lives.
Automotive and Electric Vehicles
The automotive sector accounts for a major share of LSR demand, driven by the material's thermal stability and resistance to oils, fuels, and vibration. Under the hood, LSR is found in O-rings, gaskets, and seals for engines and transmissions, as well as connectors and grommets that protect electrical wiring.
The shift toward electric vehicles has opened new applications. LSR is increasingly used in EV battery pack seals, thermal insulation for circuit boards, and high-voltage connectors, where its dielectric properties and ability to withstand extreme temperatures are critical. Fluorinated LSR grades offer even greater resistance to aggressive media like gasoline and engine oils.
Consumer Products and Food Contact
LSR's non-toxic, odorless nature and ability to meet food-contact standards (such as FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 and BfR) make it a common material in everyday items. You will find it in kitchenware like spatulas, ice cube trays, and baking molds; baby products including bottle nipples, pacifiers, and teething toys; and personal accessories such as smartwatch bands, phone cases, and wearable fitness tracker housings.
The material's transparency and pigmentability also allow manufacturers to create aesthetically pleasing products in a range of colors, including skin tones for wearable devices.
Industrial and Electronics
In industrial settings, LSR serves as a reliable sealing material for fluid control systems, electronics enclosures, and machinery exposed to harsh conditions. Its electrical insulation properties make it valuable for connectors, cable accessories, and protective housings.
A specialized grade known as optical liquid silicone rubber (OLSR) is used for lenses, light guides, and LED fixtures. OLSR offers up to 94% light transmission, does not yellow under UV exposure, and can withstand temperatures exceeding 150°C—outperforming polycarbonate and acrylic in demanding lighting applications.
Why LSR Is Chosen
The breadth of LSR applications stems from a consistent set of advantages: biocompatibility, temperature resistance from roughly -60°C to +250°C, chemical inertness, electrical insulation, and the ability to be molded into intricate, thin-walled geometries. Its low viscosity allows it to fill complex molds with fine detail, while fast cure times (often 10–90 seconds) support high-volume production.
